Bandaranaike International Airport is also known as the Colombo International Airport (CMB). The airport is also known as the Katunayake Airport by many locals deriving from the name of the area when the airport is located,
Bandaranaike International Airport is the main gateway to the paradise island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and the home of Srilankan Airlines. The Airport is located about 30 to 35 km from the city of Colombo. The distance mainly depends on the location in Colombo and the route of travel.
Sri Lanka, as a popular tourist destination getting to and from the airport, is hassle free. On arrival, you would use the Airport Taxi Services that has a fixed tariff, or you could use any of the tour companies offering the services. If you are using a tour company it is recommended that you agree on the fee prior to embarking on the journey.
In addition to the Airport Taxi Services, if you are looking at a cost-effective journey, public transport is a good option. There are direct buses which can take you to the Colombo Central Bus Station (Pettah) within approximately 25-30 minutes. From Colombo Central Bus station, you can reach any part of the country. If you would like to take a train, the main Colombo Fort Railway Station is about 10 minutes walk, or you can take a Tuk-Tuk. Please ensure that you use a Tuk-Tuk that is installed with a meter or you agree on the fee.
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) is an international airport serving southeast Sri Lanka. It is located in the town of Mattala, 18 km (11 mi) from Hambantota. It is the first greenfield airport and the second international airport in the country, after Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.
MRIA was opened in March 2013 by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ordered the construction of the airport. Initially, several airlines flew to the airport, including SriLankan Airlines which established a hub.
However, due to low demand, most of these airlines left Mattala. As of June 2018 there are no scheduled flights from the airport.Due to the low number of flights, it has been proposed to offer long-term aircraft parking services as well as creating flying schools and maintenance services to be offered from the airport.
